What I mean is that beam pattern comes from the headlamp housing, not just the filament. UN ECE R112, the headlamp regulation used in many markets, applies to the complete headlamp rather than a bulb sold separately. The bulb has to sit correctly in the reflector. If the optic is dirty or the housing was designed around a standard H4 filament, a 130/90W bulb can create hot spots instead of a clean cutoff.

From my perspective, the standard H4 in a clean E39 headlight beats a high-wattage bulb in a poor housing. I know that sounds like the less exciting choice. It is. That is the point.

Compatibility: Where High-Wattage Bulbs Get Complicated
