The $890 Hella Work Light Mistake That Taught Me When to Say I Need to Check


In the summer of 2017, I learned the difference between a good part and a correctly specified part. I was new to commercial vehicle lighting, and I wanted to be the supplier who could handle the entire project. That is exactly how I ended up paying $890 to fix a Hella work light order I approved without reading the beam pattern.

The customer operated road maintenance trucks. They needed rear-facing work lights to show the area behind the truck when a crew was setting signs and cones. Looking back, I should have asked for the installation height, mounting angle, and working distance before sending a quote. At the time, I thought that choosing a reputable brand was enough. I had sold a similar unit a few years earlier, and I was about to quote from memory. Then I opened the current installation manual to double-check the mounting footprint. The motorized spotlight was rated for 12V. The truck was 24V. If I had sent the quote and the customer had installed it, the first rotation could have damaged the motor.

I caught it before the order went out, but I did not feel relieved. Even after choosing the correct unit, I kept second-guessing every other line item. The two weeks before delivery were stressful because I knew the only thing separating that error from the $890 beam pattern mistake was luck.

Black spotlight is a finish description, not a product specification. A motorized spotlight also has a voltage rating, a current draw, a mounting location, and a controller requirement. Color should be the last thing on the checklist.

A headlight assembly may share the same shape as another model while the connector, mounting bracket, or control module differs. The wrong choice can cost more than the lamp itself.

So I ask for the vehicle code or a part number from the existing assembly. I ask whether the vehicle is 12V or 24V. I ask whether the headlight will be installed as a complete unit or integrated with wiring that might not support the load. If the answer takes me out of my experience, I check with the supplier before promising a delivery date.

This is also where the marketing side of my job has to be honest. Per FTC business guidance, claims have to be backed up with evidence. I cannot say a Hella product fits every truck or that no modification is needed unless I have verified it for that order. I would rather adjust a quote than defend a false statement later.

The request that finally made the boundary obvious
