HELLA 5x7 Headlights, Conversion Headlights, and Dimmable Spotlights: A Buyer's Guide to the Three Lighting Jobs


I'm the office administrator for a 60-person equipment company. I don't design lighting systems, but I've been managing our maintenance and safety purchases for about five years—roughly $40,000 a year across 12 vendors. When a request lands on my desk for 'better headlights' or 'a light by the loading dock,' it's usually one of three different jobs. And that's the problem: most advice online treats them like the same purchase.

This guide is not a 'best HELLA lighting' ranking. It's a decision tree. Here are the three scenarios I actually deal with:

  • Vehicle lighting: replacing a 5x7 sealed beam with HELLA 5x7 headlights or HELLA conversion headlights.

Why There's No One 'Best' HELLA Setup

The industry has shifted under us in the last five years. What was best practice in 2020—buy the brightest LED setup you can find—doesn't always apply in 2025. I say that as someone who has ordered both the bright option and the sensible option. More than once.

The fundamentals haven't changed: beam pattern, mounting, heat, and compatibility. But the execution has changed a lot. Better halogen bulbs, cleaner conversion housings, and more reliable dimmable electronics mean the 'best' answer is now split by scenario.

I didn't fully understand that until a failed conversion install in April 2024. The product was fine. The fitment wasn't. That single order made me rethink how I evaluate lighting specs.

Scenario A: Upgrading a 5x7 Headlight Bucket

If your vehicle uses a rectangular 5x7 inch sealed beam—common on older trucks, Jeeps, and some off-road platforms—you've probably seen two HELLA options: HELLA 5x7 headlights and HELLA conversion headlights. They're related, but not identical.

HELLA 5x7 headlights usually means a complete sealed lamp or a replacement housing designed to fit the original 5x7 opening. It's a beam-pattern upgrade you can do without rewiring the vehicle. Good for someone who wants the car back on the road quickly.

HELLA conversion headlights typically replace the old sealed beam with a housing that accepts a replaceable H4/H5 halogen bulb. That gives you more flexibility if you want to upgrade bulbs later or wire in a relay harness. It also means one more part to fail—a bulb, a socket, an adjustment tab—so I only recommend it when you're comfortable with basic electrical work.

I'm usually in favor of conversion headlights for a vehicle that will be kept for years, but only after checking three things:

  • The mounting depth on the vehicle, not just the lamp width.
  • The wiring connector and whether a separate adapter is needed.
  • Whether the housing is marked for on-road use. Under FMVSS 108, headlamps sold for highway use need DOT/SAE compliance. Verify current requirements at NHTSA's website.

One warning: 'plug-and-play' is the most dangerous phrase in this category. In 2023, I saved $70 by buying a housing that didn't come with the right adapter ring. The labor to 'make it fit' cost us $180. I should have verified fitment before ordering. No brand is immune to this.

As of January 2025, I've seen HELLA 5x7 housings quoted anywhere from $45 to $130 per lamp depending on the version. Prices change, so verify current quotes. But the cost of the lamp is rarely the deciding factor—the cost of your technician's time is.

Scenario B: Portable Area Lighting—Spotlight Lantern or Dimmable Spotlight?

This scenario comes up more often than you'd think. We have mechanics working on heavy equipment, and sometimes they won't be anywhere near the workshop. They need portable light. The question is whether that light should spread out or stay focused.

A spotlight lantern is basically a portable light with a wide diffuser. It's your 'fill the whole room' tool. If you're changing a tire in the dark, setting up a temporary workbench, or trying to see tools scattered on the floor, this is what you want. It won't throw a tight beam far, and that's fine.

A dimmable spotlight is different. It concentrates light on one target—an engine bay, a valve, a piece of equipment—and the dimming is not a luxury. A fixed-output spotlight is often too harsh at close range. Being able to drop it to 30 or 40 percent protects the operator's eyes and shows the work surface better.

My mistake in 2021: I bought a non-dimmable spotlight because it saved $65. It was too bright for the job from the moment we used it. The technician had to rig a metal grate in front of the lens to cut glare. We bought the dimmable version two weeks later. The first unit sat in a storage bin until I finally wrote it off. Net loss: $65, plus a week of bad lighting.

If the work is close and in one place, buy dimmable. If the work is 'what's around me right now,' a spotlight lantern is probably the better first tool.

Scenario C: Fixed Lighting With a Motion Sensor—How Does a Motion Sensor Light Work?

Now the one that gets asked by name: how does motion sensor light work?

Most common ones use a passive infrared (PIR) sensor. The sensor has a lens that splits its field of view into zones. Anything warm—a person, a vehicle, an animal—moves between zones, changes the infrared energy hitting the sensor, and trips the switch. The light stays on for whatever timeout you set, then turns off after the movement drops below the threshold. A photocell on many fixtures also blocks the sensor from turning the light on during daylight.

So for a loading dock or a fenced storage area, I'm not looking at a 'brighter' lamp first. I'm looking at the sensor's aim and adjustability. These failures are usually installation failures:

  • Sensor aimed at a busy street, so it stays on all night.
  • Timeout set too long, so the light burns all of its energy after nobody's there.
  • Mounting too low, so the sensor picks up deer and stray cats.

If you want a HELLA work light or spotlight in this setting, treat the motion sensor as a separate control part. A standard vehicle lamp isn't designed to plug into a PIR switch without the right driver or relay. For most outdoor installations, you're better off buying a fixture with the sensor built in or adding an in-line PIR controller rated for the load.

Also count the switching cycles. A motion sensor light turns on and off many more times than a normal light. If you need a dimmable spotlight as the load, confirm it's rated for repeated switching and electronic controls. Not all dimmable spotlights play nicely with PIR switches.

How to Decide Which Scenario You're In

If you're still here, here's a simple process:

  1. Is the light going on a vehicle or on a building/stand? Vehicle? Go to Step 2. Building/stand? Go to Step 3.
  2. Is the old lamp a 5x7 sealed beam? Yes, and you want a highway-usable upgrade? Start with HELLA 5x7 headlights or HELLA conversion headlights. No, and you're adding auxiliary lighting? That's a different decision; don't order a headlight housing designed for a 5x7 bucket.
  3. Does the area need light all the time, or only when someone is there? Only when someone's there? Motion-sensor with PIR is the answer. All the time at close range? Dimmable spotlight. Open area, hands-free positioning? Spotlight lantern.

I know this looks obvious once it's written down. But in real procurement, the obvious gets skipped. I've had a supervisor request 'the best HELLA light' when what he actually needed was a motion-sensor fixture to stop break-ins at a storage shed. Same brand, different category, and no lamp upgrade would have solved that complaint.

It took me about three years and a couple of expensive returns to learn that. Now I ask the scenario question before I ask the product question. That's the closest thing I have to a universal answer.

One more thing: lighting rules and products keep moving. What was true for sealed beams in 2020 isn't true for 5x7 conversions in 2025. The good news is that better options exist. The key is to buy for the job you actually have.
