The E36 Hella headlights are a different form factor, made for BMW E36s with clear replacement lenses. Why compare both? Because the buying decision is the same: do you trust a cheap replacement or pay for the name-brand unit?
My own E36 story is a perfect example. I bought a no-name 'upgrade' pair for a project car. Out of the box they looked great. On the road, they threw scattered light, glared at oncoming traffic, and made night driving a guessing game. It can work for low-light plants or seed starting, maybe, but not for anything that needs to actually thrive.
I don't have lab-grade PPFD data on my old work light, and I didn't track exact photon output. What I have is a better lesson: buy a grow light for plants, and buy a work light for work. They're not the same thing.
The Choice Framework: What To Buy (Based on What I Wish I'd Done)
Here's the decision guide I now run through before spending money on any lighting. It's short, but it would have saved me hundreds if I'd used it earlier.
