A 130/90W H4 bulb isn't just a "brighter" version of a 60/55W bulb. It draws roughly twice the current on high beam, produces more heat, and likely needs a relay harness. I start by asking two questions: How long will each lamp stay on, and what's the vibration level? A bulb that lasts 600 hours in a garage might last 200 hours in a truck that runs all night on rough roads.

Checkpoint: write the expected hours per week, the environment (dust, rain, high vibration), and the mounting orientation. "We need brighter lights" is not a spec.

Step 2: Verify the base, voltage, and housing limits

That sounds obvious, but I've seen purchase orders for "H4" bulbs from suppliers whose catalog lists the same part number for 12V and 24V chassis. Step 6: Plan for dashboard warning lights

This is the step most buyers forget. On modern vehicles with bulb-out detection, a high-wattage H4 or an LED replacement can trip a warning light. The classic question is "why does the emergency brake light come on after a lamp upgrade?" In some commercial trailers and older chassis with a shared ground, a poor ground return from the tail lamp circuit creates a voltage drop that confuses the ABS or brake controller. Step 7: Build a replacement and test procedure
